As a way of providing a forum for education and critical dialogue, MAWA hosts talks by local and visiting artists and cultural workers. These guests speak to the MAWA community about their personal art practices, topical art issues, art theory, or art history. Lectures are presented through our First Friday lecture series, and Artist Lecture series, as well as through larger thematic symposia.
First Fridays are an informal lunch-hour lecture series on a wide variety of topics from how museums acquire artworks to the role of the artist in contemporary society.
Each season MAWA invites local and visiting women artists to present lectures about their artistic practice.
The Wendy Wersch Memorial Lecture Series is an annual event celebrating the memory of Winnipeg artist Wendy Wersch. Each lecture celebrates women in the visual arts who act as role models for innovative cultural investigation. The lecture series builds awareness of feminist art criticism, activism and practice.
