In El Salvador, the making of piscuchas (kites) is an enduring tradition, taught generation to generation by family members. Piscuchas fill the skies in the windy season of October, each one unique, reflecting individual makers. The practice of flying a piscucha requires great aerobatic skill. It is a battle, as you maneuver the wind and out-strategize your opponent. These kites are colourful, creative objects in and of themselves. Make one to hang in your home or in anticipation of spring! This craft is appropriate for all ages.

Albyn Carias is an interdisciplinary artist. He immigrated to Canada from El Salvador at the age of 13 and has a BFA from Brandon University Ishkabatens waasa Gaa inaabateg, Visual and Aboriginal Arts Department. Carias’s process focuses on experimentation with unconventional materials, pushing against imposed social and artistic borders. He is also an avid craftsperson and is currently working at Manitoba Craft Council.
