In celebration of MAWA’s 40th anniversary, we have put together an exciting selection of shorts from the Winnipeg Film Group vault and beyond. These media works, old and new, resonate loudly with works that are funny and profound, playful and experimental: they are one aspect of our shared history.
Armour for Living: A Celebration of Women's Moving Image showcases local artist films and videos that address themes such as memory, diaspora and intergenerational narratives that span over the past four decades. Artists include Cecilia Araneda, Karen Asmundson and Gwen Trutnau, Abby Falvo, Wendy Geller, Christina Hajjar, Joanne Johnson Jackson, Amanda Kindzierski, Ekene Emeka Maduka, Sylvia Matas, Farrah Murdock, Carole O’Brien, Hope Peterson, Heidi Phillips, Redsun, Karen Remoto, Eden Samson, Nicole Shimonek, Danielle Sturk and Rhayne Vermette.
Both MAWA and the WFG have faced intense challenges these past few months - the fire that shuttered MAWA on December 13 and then the sudden death of Jaimz Asmundson, Dave Barber Cinematheque Programming Director, on January 1. Now, more than ever, we recognize the importance of coming together, seeing old friends and making new ones—building community—while celebrating art.
Let us join together to laugh and sigh in a darkened room. And afterwards, we will raise a glass to that past, and to our creative future.
