Layla grew up in a rural area of southern Afghanistan in the province of Ghazni. She learned the unique, Afghan embroidery technique from her mother and grandmother together with her cousins. She would spend summers with her cousins and village girls sitting together in the garden or on roofs while chatting and working on embroidery pieces. She came to Canada in 2004 after living almost 6 years as a refugee in Iran, and is now living in Winnipeg with her husband and six children.
