Dura Mater: Objective/Subjective looks at the work of a group of neuroscientists through the eyes of five artists and gives us a glimpse of the arcane made knowable. Objective scientific truths are made visible through the subjective lenses of the artists.
Julie Gendron, Erika Lincoln, Bonnie Marin, Janet Shaw-Russell and Tricia Wasney were paired with researchers from the Manitoba Neuroscience Network who graciously shared their work, knowledge, and ideas. This show facilitates new conversations between science and the arts, with diverse and thought provoking works.
Viewers of the art pieces can relate to the science on an emotional level, especially when what they see is evocative of their own personal experiences. It gives them a chance to focus away from pathology to look at the beauty in the science.
The project has been over a year in the making. MAWA launched the project in partnership with the Manitoba Neuroscience Network in 2019. Director/Curator of the Buhler Gallery, Leona Herzog, joined as coordinator and then as curator, culminating in an exhibition at the Buhler Gallery opening May 13, 2021.
