First Friday- Hands On: Contemporary Indigenous Beading with Jennifer Smith

Hands On will look at the way artists are using beads and are inspired by beading in their contemporary practices. The featured artists are all exploring unique ideas with beading as the jumping-off point for discussions on colonialism, family, pop culture, community, the cosmos and much more.

As part of the Beadwork Symposium: Ziigimineshin Winnipeg 2020, MAWA is hosting this special lecture. Beadwork Symposium: Ziigimineshin Winnipeg 2020 is a multi-venue beading symposium organized by the Manitoba Craft Council in partnership with Urban Shaman Contemporary Art Gallery. The symposium will be hosted at the Manitoba Museum, February 6 to 9, 2020.

  • Jennifer Smith is a Métis curator, writer and arts administrator from Treaty One territory. She has curated exhibits and video programs for the Manitoba Craft Council, Video Pool Media Arts Centre, Open City Cinema, MAWA, the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library, and the Winnipeg Arts Council; in 2018 she was the Indigenous Curator in Residence at aceartinc.
