From 1884 to 1922, Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester repeating rifle fortune, built what is now known as the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. This dwelling became her life’s work—an artistic practice and source of speculation—defying architectural conventions. It inspired artist Jeremy Blake to create a series of videos that present a psychological portrait of the house. Courtney R. Thompson will discuss the material legacy of Sarah Winchester and the myths surrounding her that continue to impact artists and scholars interested in the psychological resonance of domestic space.
