Presented in partnership with Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art
Sarah Sense draws upon traditional Chitimacha and Choctaw basket techniques for the creation of flat mats and baskets using the nontraditional material of cut paper. Her self-taught weaving practice deconstructs and reconstructs photographic images, exposing socio-political themes affecting Indigenous peoples. When travelling to meet Indigenous artists in their communities throughout the Americas and Southeast Asia, Sense learned about artists making art in and from the land of their community with locally sourced materials, closely linking land to traditional preservation. Her weaving tells stories drawing on these connections.
Free, everyone welcome!
