Orange Shirt Day is named in honour of Phyllis Webstad, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day of residential school. Orange Shirt Day honours residential school survivors and remembers those who did not survive. It is an opportunity for all peoples of this land to discuss colonization, past and present, and gather in a spirit of reconciliation. Dakota Nadeau will lead this workshop, where participants will create tiny beaded orange shirt pins on felt. Nadeau is Cree and Anishininew (Ojicree). She began her beading journey in 2018 and has loved every stitch of the way!

Dakota Nadeau an Anishininew woman with long dark brown hair stands outside smiling at the camera.

About the Cross-Cultural Beading Circle
Do you like gathering in person to bead? If so come to MAWA on the scheduled Monday evenings. Do you prefer to gather virtually? Join the circle via Zoom.
Everyone is invited to learn and/or work independently in a welcoming atmosphere. No experience necessary. Novice and experienced beaders of all cultures, ages and genders are welcome. Some sessions are unstructured and provide an opportunity to work on our own projects, together. Most feature a guest beader, who will share their history with beading and their techniques. When there is a guest, a kit of materials (incl. beads, thread, cloth and leather) will be available for you at MAWA. If you are joining in via Zoom, you can pick it up in advance, or it can be delivered to you in Winnipeg.

This workshop is offered twice, to create opportunity for more participants (do not enroll in both sessions).
